Rhubarb

I inherited a well-established garden when I moved into this house six months ago. It's so fun to see what is coming up....This rhubarb has been amazing to watch.

Galveston, Texas

It's spring break for my girls and I (the great thing about homeschooling is that you can declare breaks when it best suits your schedule...I wanted it to coincide with our trip to Texas and Easter so that's why we are on break this week). 

My mom and stepdad recently moved to the Houston, TX area and so we took a long weekend and headed down to see where they now live. The weather was sunny, warm and dry - completely the opposite of where we live so it was great. 

We took a day trip down to Galveston to see the island and the Gulf of Mexico - again, a very different coastline than what we are used to here.

We saw several Man of War jellyfish washed up on the beach, and from what I've heard and read, you don't want to touch one of these. Another name for this is the "floating terror". 

We had hoped to go to the aquarium at Moody Gardens, but it was closed for renovations. Instead we went through the Rainforest pyramid and that was a pretty neat exhibit. I was going to say cool, but it was anything but cool...it was hot and humid!

March in Review

I read a total of  5 books

I ran 42 miles

I completed my second round of Whole30 and lost 6 pounds

I enjoyed playing and listening to the music of Bach

we played 3 gigs

I built a rainbow with my photos on instagram

And now we look ahead to a new month with new books, new adventures, new celebrations and new challenges.

Glimpses of Spring

We are still drenched here...when you drive along the Columbia River, it's actually a little scary how high it is. Thankfully we've had a couple dry days and have been able to get outside for walks, runs and bike rides.  Last week I had daffodils on my windowsill and this week I have ranaculas. I'm hoping that this is the week the trees will turn pink with blooms. I looked back on my photos from last year and we are more than a month behind last year's bloom schedule. At any rate, the blooms will definitely be enjoyed when they arrive!

Rain, Rain, Go Away...

It's been raining a lot and it's been hard to get out and get some good photos.
I've resorted to bringing the beauty inside since I can't enjoy it outside.

Finally today we had a break in the rain and I was even able to get a few flowers planted.

And my daughter talked me into buying this frog to add to our herb garden ....
where many frogs reside in the summer months.

Playing Tourist

We recently took advantage of some free passes and went to check out the Columbia Gorge Interpretive Center nearby. We have driven by this place many times in the past 7 years, but never taken the time to go in. It was fascinating to read about the local history of this place we love so much. 

It was a rare sunny day and the clouds were beautiful. I really liked the way they played off the glass structure of this building.

My favorite part was the Court of Cedars which is located on the outside of the building.

Ski Day

This past Friday we took the day off school and work and headed up the mountain for some cross country skiing. The weather report looked decent, but when we got there it was warmer than we anticipated and the conditions weren't all that great. We skied anyway, and were rewarded with some pretty amazing views of Mt. Hood.

Monticello Trail

While in Charlottesville, VA at the end of January, I had the opportunity to walk the Monticello Trail from the trailhead up to the Monticello visitors center. It was a lovely walk and I can only imagine how much more beautiful when the trees are filled with leaves.

This was near the end of the trail where you can look back on "Montalto" or big mountain. "Monticello" means little mountain.
