In October we had a field trip to Hoyt Arboretum in Portland. It's a gorgeous place to walk around and see a variety of trees. While there, we were introduced to the Coulter Pine cone....a gigantic pine cone. I took a picture of Sydney holding it and secretly began wishing for my own pine cone this big. Our guide told us that there are a couple Coulter pine trees near our house, so we've been driving by every couple weeks hoping to find one that has fallen.
Last week we had some really windy days here....really windy. So Sunday, on my way home from church I decided to drive by the trees to see if any had fallen. I didn't see any, but did see some branches of pine needles that had fallen. I've been hoping to collect some fallen branches to use in my Christmas decorating, so I hopped out of the car to grab them.
And that's when I saw it....
I may or may not have let out a little scream.
It's quite awesome and impressive in it's size.
Yesterday we were out running errands and decided to drive by and see if maybe, perhaps another had fallen. We didn't see any at first glance, but then noticed not one but TWO more in a pile with leaves. And now we are the proud owners of THREE Coulter pine cones.
Join us - it's fun!
