In the Kitchen ~ Gadgets & Specialty Tools

egg slicer, apple corer, lemon zester, strawberry slicer, herb chopper, corn holders, egg speparator, corn kernal remover, strawberry stem remover, banana slicer, butter cutter, pineapple slicer, bell pepper corer, etc.

The list of kitchen gadgets goes on and on and on. Most of the above can be easily replaced with one item...a knife. I am very wary of anything that has only one purpose or that could easily be replaced with a basic kitchen tool.

I'm not a gourmet chef. Heck, I'm not even that good of a cook. But the reality is, I cook dinner for my family every single day, and I have very few kitchen gadgets. Instead, I prefer to make do with the basics.

For example, I cut and peel apples almost daily for my kids. An apple peeler and corer might be a little more efficient in the cutting and peeling process, but not when it comes to cleaning up and putting it all away.

This is one area where I think less is better. Do you have too many specialized kitchen gadgets?

  1. I don't usually buy specialty gadgets but I did buy an OXO Good Grips Lemon Zester recently. I use it to turn zucchini into noodles. Trying to eat fewer grains and more vegetables made this gadget seem like it might be worth buying. Serving marinara sauce over zucchini noodles was a success!

  2. A really good knife is worth its weight in gold. I have one I use almost exclusively and was able to get rid of several others because of that.

In other news -- LOVE your cutting board!

    1. It came with a knife that was shaped like a bow - got rid of it pretty quickly as it didn't work very well. But I love the little violin shaped cutting board!
