Back to the Kids' Room

Over the past few weeks I've noticed that my girls love to play in our bedroom. Almost daily they cart books, animals and other toys down the hall and set them up in our room. I'm getting a little tired of asking them to clean up my room!

Then I had a moment of realization. The reason our room is so appealing to them is because it's spacious and not cluttered. Of course it's about twice as big as their room, but I knew I was on to something with the spaciousness.

As I went to look at their room, this is what I saw...simply too much stuff.

And so I began brainstorming. I even got my husband involved. We decided to get rid of the bookshelf and move the table over. I knew this would be getting rid of a good portion of the books and other toys. This is what we came up with....

AFTER

ahhh...space

Both of my girls are thrilled to have empty space in their room. It was such a good teaching opportunity for them...to experience, first hand, the benefits of less stuff.

  1. Jill, I've enjoyed following your journey. I talked to my two girls about this idea. I have struggled with how to help my children in this area. Thanks for all the inspiration!

  2. That's so interesting and so true--the girls gravitated to the 'happiest place' (read: most spacious and peaceful) in the house :)

  3. More than once this week they have both thanked me for "clearing" their room.
