This past week our family headed to central Oregon for a few days of rest and relaxation. One of the days we headed to the Newberry Volcanic National Monument for some hiking.
Our first stop was the big obsidian lava flow - remnants of the most recent volcanic rupture (1300 years ago!). It feels other worldly to walk through a lava flow...

Much of the rock here is pumice. Have you ever seen or held pumice? It's so incredibly light! My girls were tossing a fairly big rock back and forth like it was a rubber ball! There are also large deposits of obsidian - the shiny black rock.
There isn't much plant life in the lava flow, but every once in a while you see a tree that has managed to sprout and grow out of the rock.
