Rare Bird by Anna Whiston-Donaldson

Rare Bird- a memoir of loss and love is a beautiful yet heart-breaking story about how one family survived the loss of a beloved son and brother. Anna Whiston-Donaldson recounts the tragedy of losing her 12 year old son in a freak accident. She shares her emotions very openly and honestly, allowing the reader to get a glimpse of the confusion, hurt, anger, grief and fear she experienced.

I love reading memoirs, but the subject matter of this one was a little unsettling for me. Hearing her story did make me want to hold my children a little longer and hug them a few more times than normal. As a mother I cannot begin to fathom the loss this family continues to experience because of this tragedy.

In addition to sharing how she and her family coped and found hope, Anna manages to create a beautiful tribute to her extraordinary son. I feel like I had the privilege of meeting Jack through her stories and recollections. The book is a message of hope - a glimmer of good that can come from unthinkable circumstances.

  2. Oh my goodness, this book still haunts me. I cried like a baby through this book. BUT, I was amazed at how she could still cling to God and her beliefs throughout their ordeal. She is inspiring.
