Decorations ~ Bring Nature in the Home

When it comes to decorating, I think less is more. Especially if I'm the one decorating. Some people have a gift and an eye when it comes to decorating and then there are the rest of us.

For me, a little goes a long way and a lot just looks crazy.

My favorite way to decorate is with nature. I love to bring nature into my home. Not only is it seasonal, it requires no storage the rest of the year. I love my Christmas decorations, but I hate the thought that they sit in a box on a shelf in the garage for 11 months of the year. When you bring nature into your home, you are able to add natural, seasonal touches without having to set aside space to store your decorations.

In the spring and summer I place little bouquets or pots of flowers from my garden around the house. In the fall, I use edible squash, mini-pumpkins and gourds. In the winter it's pinecones and evergreen clippings.

Another tip for decorations, think seasonal rather than focusing on a specific holiday. And if possible, make your decorations pull double duty. I have a beautiful, homemade wreath called cradle to cross. It is made to be used for both advent and lent with small modifications. I love that I can use for an extended period of time, twice each year.

At Christmas I use red towels and napkins in the kitchen. I use them through Valentine's day and then put them away for a while. I pull them out again in the summer when things get all red, white and blue in these parts. If they were specifically Christmas towels, they would be used much less.

How about you? What can you add to this conversation?

  1. I love your ideas. I'm not that great in the decorating department, but this seems simple enough to implement, even for me!

    1. Glad you like them. Another thing I forgot to mention was that I will shell out a little extra $ for pretty kleenex boxes - especially around Christmas. Those shiny, pretty ones make beautiful, easy decorations in a useful, practical way!

  2. Nature is certainly one of my biggest inspirations for decorating. Your gourds and pinecones are just lovely!

    1. We got some of them up at the grocery store and others at a pumpkin patch. While at the pumpkin patch we had a contest to see who could find the strangest one.
