Our Simple Homeschool Set-up

Last Friday I shared what a typical homeschool day looks like for us. Today I'd like to share about our current set-up for doing school.

We've tried many things....at the kitchen table, on the family room floor...we've even done math in the bath tub (I was desperate to make math more fun).

I don't have a school room. I don't have any desire to replicate a classroom here in my home. But we do have a room where most of our learning takes place. It's also where I teach violin and where we spend a lot of our time hanging out.

This is what the room looks like when we aren't doing school.

Each morning, I pull out the small kids table (next to the futon with the lamp on it) and the desk.

I sit on the futon and use the coffee table as my desk. I have tried positioning it the other way, where I used the computer desk as my desk, but was just too distracted by the computer!

We keep all of our books and supplies in the antique, wooden cabinet.

When I take the time to set the room up, school flows much more smoothly. The girls seem to appreciate having a designated space to work, and if I need to work with one individually, I can have them join me at my "desk".

I have also found that by having to set up the space each day, it helps us stay focused and get our work done in a timely fashion. I need to clear the space by a certain time each day for violin lessons, so our work needs to be finished by then.

It's simple, flexible and it works for us.
