Memorizing

One discipline I've begun practicing is memorization. Specifically scripture memorization.

It started last year with a personal challenge to memorize 25 different verses or passages of Scripture throughout the year. There was no rhyme or reason to the verses I chose, but I kept track of them in this pocket sized spiral a friend gave me.

It was a good challenge ~ one that was met fairly easily ~ and I knew I wanted to up the ante this year.

And so I set out to memorize a whole book of Scripture. This is not easy, but it's not as random as a verse or passage here and there.

Anyway, I wanted to share with you not what I'm memorizing or even how I go about it, but rather how I've laminated my memorization work.

I simply typed up the portion I want to memorize, printed it out on card stock to make it sturdy and then had it laminated.

It's perfect because I can stand these up in two places that I spend a fair amount of time. At the kitchen sink and in the bathroom. I don't have to worry about they getting wet because they are protected by the lamination.

It's also perfect to grab these and throw them in my purse or backpack. They don't get wrinkled or worn out.

Since we are pursuing the classical education method in our homeschooling journey, there is a quite a bit of memorization work and I plan to make similar cards for my girls.

  1. I'm interested in that spiral pocket journal. Do you know where your friend got those?

    1. The fancy one that I've handwritten in came from Living Proof Ministries and I'm not seeing it on their website. It was from 2011. The other one is just one I typed up and printed out - then took to Office Depot and had it spiral bound.

  2. I read an article recently that stated according to research that the best time to memorize or learn something new is right after you have exercised. Your brain's ability to learn is at optimimum then. After I told my exercise coach, he started memorizing I Cor. and focusing on the time right after his workout.

  3. That is really neat. I'll have to do that when I start my Qur'an memorization. :)
