Weekends

In our family, weekends are a time of rest and rejuvenation…. not the kind of rest where we stay home and don’t do anything, but the kind where we get out and enjoy each other’s company.

Our girls are still young and we’ve tried to set a certain rhythm for our family ~ a rhythm that will hopefully stick as they get older and other activities try to pull them away.

We guard our weekends and refuse to regularly schedule anything that would have us going in different directions. We rarely even agree to things that include the whole family.

Why?

So we can get out and get away as a family. Doing things like this…

and walking paths like this…

This is how our family connects ~ how we build relationships with one another. It may not be popular to turn down birthday party invites, candle party invites or other social gathering invites, but it works for us.

On the rare occasions that we don’t engage in this intentional family time, I can tell that our family is off rhythm.

As Sunday arrives and the weekend comes to a close, we begin talking about what adventures the next weekend might bring. It gives us something to look forward to.

How does your family spend the weekends?

  1. JIll,

I am always immensely inspired by the images you share with us. They are so breathtakingly beautiful.

Family time weekends is one of the most peaceful practices I can imagine. As you know, I'm coming off a period of several years of working too much. Weekends are something I am now trying to carve out as sacred space, instead of letting myself "work just a little".

I'm still at the beginning of this particular journey though, and taking baby steps. Thanks for inspiring me as always.

    :) Tanja

  2. Jill, I really agree with the rhythm of the family. Our rhythm is quite off nowadays. I work afternoon shift and my hubby works days. We have been blessed not to have to use daycare for our son, but not being together as a family on evenings and weekends is really hard. We have had this schedule for 2 years and I am realizing it needs to change. Our family rhythm and marriage are starting to slip. Thanks for the nice post about your family adventures! Kari
